Jewellery Guide
Diamond basics and the 4Cs
Whether you are exploring engagement rings or everyday pieces, understanding the 4Cs helps you read a diamond certificate and choose the details that matter most to you. The 4Cs describe the cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight of a stone.
This guide is a practical companion to your certificate, helping you translate technical grades into how a diamond will actually look and feel on the hand.

Cut: how the diamond handles light
Cut is not about the shape of the stone, but about how precisely it has been proportioned and polished. A well-cut diamond reflects light back to the eye, creating brightness and lively sparkle.
- Prioritise cut if you want maximum brilliance and life in the stone.
- For engagement rings, an excellent or very good cut is often worth the focus.
Colour: from warm to icy
Most white diamonds show a subtle range of colour from cool, icy tones to warmer shades. Colour is graded on a scale, with the most colourless stones graded at the top of the scale.
- Slight warmth can be beautiful, especially in yellow or rose gold settings where the metal already adds a golden tone.
- If you love a crisp, neutral look, pair higher colour grades with platinum or white gold.
Clarity: how clean the stone appears
Clarity describes the tiny internal characteristics of a diamond. Many of these are not visible to the naked eye, especially once the diamond is set in jewellery.
- Look for a stone that appears clean when you view it without magnification in normal lighting.
- For designs with many smaller stones, a balanced clarity grade often offers the best value.
Carat: size, presence, and balance
Carat describes the weight of the diamond and is closely linked to how large it appears. Two stones with the same carat weight can look slightly different in size depending on their cut and shape.
- Consider the size of your hand and how you plan to wear the piece every day.
- Slightly below popular milestones (for example, just under 1.0ct) can offer a similar look with a more refined price.
The most harmonious diamonds balance all four Cs rather than chasing a single number. Our collections are curated with this balance in mind so the piece feels elegant, luminous, and wearable.
A simple way to prioritise
- Start with cut, then choose a colour that suits your preferred metal.
- Look for eye-clean clarity rather than chasing the highest grade.
- Adjust carat weight last so the piece fits both your hand and your budget.
